Valais Blacknose Sheep at Bauman’s Fiber Farm
The Valais Blacknose sheep is one of the most recognizable sheep breeds in the world, known for its distinctive black markings, beautiful wool, and friendly temperament. Originating in the Valais region of Switzerland, the breed has gained popularity around the world for both its appearance and fiber quality.
These sheep are admired for their calm nature, strong structure, and unique look that sets them apart from other breeds. As the breed continues to develop in the United States, careful breeding and thoughtful genetics are essential to maintaining the qualities that make Valais Blacknose sheep so special.
Our Breeding Program
At Bauman’s Fiber Farm, our primary focus is raising quality Valais Blacknose sheep. Our breeding program is built around carefully selected genetics and thoughtful breeding decisions with the goal of producing healthy, well-structured animals that reflect the classic traits of the breed.
We focus on developing sheep with:
• strong conformation
• distinctive Valais markings
• beautiful fleece
• calm temperament
Each breeding decision is made with the long-term improvement of the flock in mind.
Imported Genetics
To continue strengthening our program, we incorporate imported genetics from New Zealand & the UK through both semen and embryos. These genetics come from carefully developed bloodlines that help improve structure, fleece quality, and overall breed characteristics.
By combining these genetics with selective breeding on our farm, we continue working toward producing animals that represent the best qualities of the Valais Blacknose breed.
Learning From the Breed Worldwide
Our commitment to the breed extends beyond the farm. We have traveled to Sweden and Switzerland to study Valais Blacknose sheep where the breed originated and where it continues to be developed internationally.
Learning from established breeders and seeing the sheep in these programs has helped guide the development of our own flock.
We also exhibit our sheep each year at the National Valais Blacknose Show, where we continue evaluating our animals and learning alongside other breeders working to develop the breed in the United States.
Our Flock
Our flock continues to grow as we carefully select animals that represent the qualities we want to carry forward. Through the use of imported genetics and thoughtful breeding decisions, we are focused on building a strong foundation for Valais Blacknose sheep here on our farm.
Lamb Availability
Each year we offer a limited number of lambs and breeding animals. Because availability changes throughout the year and lambs are often reserved quickly, we encourage interested buyers to reach out for current availability.

Understanding Breed-Up Levels
Valais Blacknose sheep are still being developed in the United States through a structured breeding program. Because of this, animals are often described by their breed-up percentage, which indicates how close they are genetically to pure Valais Blacknose sheep.
The common levels include:
F1 – First generation cross, 50% Valais Blacknose
F2 – Second generation, approximately 75% Valais
F3 – Third generation, approximately 87.5% Valais
F4 – Fourth generation, approximately 93.75% Valais
Purebred – 100% Valais Blacknose - By imported embryos
Each generation moves closer to the traditional Swiss breed standard while maintaining strong health and structure within the flock.

Selecting the Right Animal
The best animal for a program often depends on a breeder’s goals. Some farms prefer to start with earlier generation animals and continue breeding forward, while others seek animals closer to purebred status.
At Bauman’s Fiber Farm, we work to raise animals that demonstrate:
• strong structure
• correct markings
• quality fleece
• calm temperament
We are always happy to talk with buyers about their breeding goals and help determine which animals may be the best fit for their flock.
